The Enterprise-D departs for her first mission, the assessment of Farpoint Station on Deneb IV, which has been built by the Bendi for the Federation. During the mission, the crew makes first contact with the omnipotent being Q. |

When the Borg invade Federation space, the Enterprise-D is heavily damaged at the encounter with the Borg cube: the warp drive is damaged, the main deflector destroyed, Captain Picard kidnapped and assimilated, therefore the first officer Riker takes over command. After the forced attack on the Federation fleet near Wolf 359, the crew suceeds in rescueing Picard. After the cube has been destroyed with his help, he assumes command again. |

During the secret Celtris mission, Captain Edward Jellico assumes command of the Enterprise. In the course of the mission, Captain Picard is taken hostage and tortured by the Cardassians. After Picard has been freed, the starship is put under his command again. |

After the mysterious disappearing of Captain Picard, the command of the Enterprise is assigned to Commander Riker. When Picard, who has been declared death, is found and freed, he assumes command again. |

Attempting to prevent the destruction of the Veridian system by Dr. Tolian Soran the Enterprise is attacked by Soran's allies, the outlawed Duras sisters. The engineering section is destroyed after a warp core breach, and the saucer section crashes on Veridian III due to the resulting shock wave. All crew members are rescued by three starships, among them the USS Farragut, from the surface of the planet. The saucer section of the Enterprise, however, has been irreparably damaged by the crash and cannot be salvaged. |
