Plot summary
Antimatter fireworks lits the sky above San Francisco, Earth and people are cheering and waving, when Voyager returns home, flying over the Golden Gate Bridge. The news coverage on this event that took place 10 years ago is displayed on a wall screen in Admiral Janeway's appartment. When the report on Voyager's homecoming ends, Janeway turns off the screen and moves to the window. With lonesome quietness, she glances at San Francisco Bay, where her 23 year journey ended.
Later this evening, the same appartment is crowded with former crew members of Voyager and some special guests, which celebrate and commemorate the important anniversary. Janeway is there, Captain Kim is there, who has been on a deep space mission for 4 years and meets the grown daughter of Naomi Wildman, as well as an aged Tom Paris, who has apparently become a popular holonovel writer. Tom welcomes the newly-wed Doctor, who arrives with his wife Lana. In another part of the room, the Admiral has a more serious talk with B'Elanna. Apparently on demand and in the name of Janeway, the Federation liaison has tried her best to suggest the Klingon Korath as a new member of the Klingon High Council. While complaing that her daughter is absent due to the special mission she was sent on by Janeway, B'Elanna is interrupted when Cmd. Reginald Barclay brings up a toast on Voyager and the journey. And those who aren't with them anymore, Janeway adds.
Several Starfleet Academy cadets are sitting in the Pathfinder Lab at Starfleet Communications. Commander Barclay gives a lecture on the Borg, supported by the person who "literally wrote the book on the Borg", Admiral Janeway. Just when some cadets start to ask "uncomfortable" questions on the past and Seven of Nine, Janeway has to leave.
In her office, she answers to an urgent comm message from Ensign Miral Paris. It seems that Korath is satisfied with her efforts and wants to meet Janeway.
Now that her journey is about to commence, the Admiral visits the mentally ill Tuvok, who now lives in a Starfleet Medical center, in order to say goodbye for her long-term friend. While Tuvok believes she isn't who she claims to be because of her unexpected visit, Janeway tries to ensure him that she will never come back - at least not at this time and place. With tears in her eyes, she leaves a picture of the Voyager crew from better times.
Back in her appartment, the Doctor pays her a visit. After some small talk about his bride, she asks him for a experimental classified drug which protects persons from tachyon radiation. The former EMH is relucant, but agrees to help his captain one last time.
At Pathfinder, the Admiral gets last advices and some fresh tea from Barclay, the only person who seems to know of her risky plan. Of course he would like to join her, but she assures him that he has done enough for her.
Before she leaves, there still is one last duty. At the grave of Chakotay who died some years ago, she asks her former First Officer for his opinion on her plan, which she knows is difficult and risky to carry out. Yet, she is sure that things will be better for all of them.
26 years in the past... It is night aboard the starship Voyager, which is still stuck in the Delta Quadrant on her way home. B'Elanna wakes up Tom and tells him that it's time. The baby is coming, the still asleep Lieutenant realizes, and calls Sickbay. Before he knows what exactly to do, B'Elanna has left the quarters, and he runs after her. However, their excitement was unnecessary, as the Doctor tells the young couple, since it's another false alarm.
Later in the Ready Room, Captain Janeway and Chakotay are discussing this latest event on Voyager, along with Crewman Chell's proposal to take over Mess hall, now that Neelix has left Voyager and no one provides the crew with delicious meals anymore. Though Chell shows a strange humor with his sample menu, Janeway invites her First Officer to join her for lunch. Sadly, he has to refuse, as he already has an appointment.
This appointment is his third date with Seven of Nine, the former Borg drone and head of Astrometrics. They have a picknick, prepared by Seven with a sense for "perfection" in cargo bay 2, and seem to enjoy their time together.
Meanwhile in the mess hall, their is a far more serious meeting. Icheb has challenged Tuvok for a match of Kal'toh, and as usual it seems that Tuvok is about to win. Yet, Icheb beats the Vulcan with the next turn, a surprising development Harry, who is sitting next to Tuvok, notices with malicious pleasure. He wants to challenge Tuvok as well, however, the security chief seems to be bewildered by his loss.
He heads for sickbay, where the Doctor confirms his assumption: his lack of concentration is another symptome for his progression mental disorder. He hasn't told anyone about this illness yet, and he doesn't want to do so until it affects his duties.
At the same time, Seven has returned to Astrometrics for a game Kadis-Kot with Neelix. Of course, the Talaxian is still in his people's colony dozens of light years away and interacts with Seven via the viewscreen. He plans to marry Dexa, and asks Seven about her own love life. Seven is relucant, but admits that her picknick with Commander Chakotay was enjoyable. Fortunately for her, a sensor alarm interrupts their conversation. Seven detects increased neutrino emissions in a nearby nebula.
Later on bridge, all senior officers are present. Seven has found an explanation for the readings. It seems that the nebula is full of wormholes. Naturally, Harry Kim understands what that means. A good chance for a quick trip home, since at least one wormhole has to lead to the Alpha Quadrant. The other officers are amused of Harry's neverending optimism, but seem to be hopeful as well.
In the future, Tuvok seems to have a serious spasm. The physician can't calm him down until the Doctor arrives. As he learns, Tuvok is outraged because of the disappearance of Admiral Janeway. He believes she has been replaced by an impostor, and his friend is in danger. While the Doctor is unsure about Tuvok's conclusions, he is concerned as well because of Janeway sudden departure.
At Pathfinder, he asks Reg for the reasons and destination of her journey. The Commander tells him he knows nothing as well, however, the former EMH gets suspicious when Reg starts to stumble, what he hasn't done for years. The Doctor wants him to tell him everything.
In the meantime, Janeway has reached a Moon-like planet with her specially-equipped shuttle. In the caves below the surface, she meets Miral, who is accompanied by some Klingons. Miral is eager to start the exchange with Korath, however, Janeway tells her that she did a good job, but her mission is finished now.
Together with the Klingons, the Admiral enters what seems to be a hidden Klingon base of the House of Korath. Unforunately, Korath has changed the terms of their agreement and now wants not only the seat in Klingon High Council, but also the specs for the defensive systems of Janeway's shuttle. Of course Janeway doesn't agree, even if that means that she doesn't get the device she's come for. She leaves Korath's hideaway without further discussions.
In the Delta Quadrant 16 years earlier, the crew has decided to take the chance and explore the mysterious nebula. The radiation interferes with their sensor so that they can't detect anything, however, they are still confident. When suddenly, sensors detect several tritanium signatures directly ahead of them, and a huge Borg cube emerges from the nebular clouds of dust and gases, almost colliding with Voyager. Janeway orders to leave the nebula immediately. Even if there was a way home here, Voyager wouldn't survive long enough in this Borg-infested region of space. Outside the nebula, it seems that the Borg haven't detected Voyager due to the radiation. Yet, the Borg Queen knows of their presense in "her" nebula, and carefully observes Voyager's position and course from that moment.
In the conference room, the senior offices evaluate their encounter. Since there seem to be at least 47 cubes in the nebula, Janeway sees no possibility and orders to resume course. All officers agree - except Harry, who still thinks they can somehow outsmart the Borg and reach the road home. But, Janeway has made her decision.
Later, Harry meets Tom in the corridor. He is still eager to convince the Captain to return to the nebula, and wants to persuade Tom as well. However, now that he's married and will soon become father, the former "Captain Proton" isn't as adventurous and daring as Harry anymore.
In Astrometrics, Chakotay joins Seven to talk with her about the development of their relationship. They both enjoyed their last date very much, and the Commander suggest to continue with a candle light dinner. Seven is unsure, but finally agrees.
In sickbay, the former drone asks the Doctor to remove the failsafe mechanism that might harm her if she deepens her romantic relationship. Unaware of her recent encounters with Commander Chakotay, the Doctor is happy about her decision. He has worked out a solution to the problem in the last months and can now help Seven with a single surgery. He hopes that she might use her new ability to experience the full spectrum of emotions for some further "social lessions" with him, however, she assures him that she has all the help she needs.
In the future, Admiral Janeway has returned to Korath's base. Seemingly she has reconsidered his new offer and now agrees to give him the shield technology of her shuttle. However, when she inspects the temporal device she wants in return from the Klingon, she transports the piece of technology and herself to her shuttle and departs. Korath's huge battleship pursues the shuttle, but since it is protected by a regenerative armor it jumps to warp without any damage.
Soon after the shuttle has reached its destination, another vessel approaches. It's Harry's ship, the USS Rhode Island. Harry was told about Janeway's plan by the Doctor, who got his information from Cmd. Barclay, and now wants to take Kathryn into custody. In Harry's ready room, Janeway tries to persuade Harry to let her continue her mission to bring Voyager, to bring the entire crew home 16 years earlier, when they have already grown together to a family, but haven't endured too many hardships. He think it's not only a violation of protocol, but far too risky, but Janeway remembers him that he was willing to take risks as well when he was younger. Finally, Harry gives in and beams with Janeway to her shuttle, where the Admiral says goodbye to the former ensign.
Just when Janeway projects the tachyon beam to open a temporal rift to the past, two Klingon vessels jump out of warp and attack the vessel. The armor fails before Janeway can active it, and she has to call Harry to help her. With the USS Rhode Island distracting the Klingons, the shuttle can safely enter the rift and travel to the past - seven years after Voyager had been stranded in the Delta Quadrant...

Quotes
Cmd. Barclay: "May I have everyone's attention, please? Ten years ago tonight, this crew returned home from the longest away mission in Starfleet's history. Twenty-three years together made you a family. One I'm proud to have been adopted by. So let's raise our glasses... to the journey!" Admiral Janeway: "And to those who aren't here to celebrate it with us." |
Tom Paris: "Paris to Sickbay, it's time." Doctor: "Relax, Mr. Paris. Can she stand?" Tom Paris: "Affirmative." Doctor: "Then I suggest you report to Sickbay." Tom Paris: "What about B'Elanna?" Doctor: "Her too." |
Chakotay: "Crewman Chell's asked about taking over in the mess hall full-time." Janeway: "Neelix left some pretty big pots and pans to fill. Does Mr. Chell feel he's up to the challenge?" Chakotay: "Apparently so. He's prepared a sample menu." Janeway: "Plasma leak soup? Chicken warp core done 'bleu'?!" Chakotay: "If his cooking's as bad as his puns, we're in trouble." |
Tuvok (to Icheb): "Kal'toh is as much a game of patience as it is of logic. An experienced player will sometimes take several hours to decide his next move, and in some cases even days may be necessary to..." Icheb: "Kal'toh!" Harry: "You beat him!" |
Harry (about the wormholes in the nebula): "But just one of them leads to the alpha quadrant!" Tom Paris: "Who knows, Harry? It might take us right into your parents' living room." Janeway: "Alter course, Mr. Paris. Ensign, when you speak to your mother... tell her we may need her to move the sofa." |
Harry (after Borg encounter in the nebula): "We can't just give up on those wormholes!" Captain Janeway: "Oh, yes, we can. I'm sorry, Mr. Kim. You may be the Captain someday, but not today." |
Admiral Janeway (about the Klingon): "I hope you told him I didn't mean to be rude." Miral Paris: "I told him if he didn't show you more respect I would break his arm." Admiral Janeway: "You are your mother's daughter!" |
Harry: "Don't you want to find a way home?" Tom Paris: "I am home, Harry." Harry: "Captain Proton would never walk away from a mission like this!" Tom Paris: "Captain Proton doesn't have a wife and a baby on the way." |
| Admiral Janeway: "I'm not talking about technology. I'm talking about people - people who weren't as lucky as you and me. You said you and the Doctor wanted to 'keep things in the family.' But our family's not complete anymore, is it? I'm asking you to trust my judgment, Harry... one last time." |
Harry: "If Starfleet Command finds out I had anything to do with this, they'll demote me back to Ensign!" Admiral Janeway: "You worry too much, Harry. It's turning you gray." |
Captain Janeway: "Fresh coffee. Do you want a cup?" Admiral Janeway: "No. I only drink tea (!) now." |
Admiral Janeway: "I know exactly what you're thinking."
Captain Janeway: "You've also become a telepath?" |
Seven (to Borg Queen, during regeneration): "What do you want?" Borg Queen: "Do I need a reason to visit a friend?" Seven: "We're not friends!" Borg Queen: "No. We're more than that - we're family!" |
| Chakotay: "Our chances would be good with one Kathryn Janeway on the bridge. But with two... I'd bet on this ship any day." |
Admiral Janeway: "I want to know why you didn't tell me about this."
Captain Janeway: "Because I remember how stubborn and self-righteous I used to be. I figured you might try to do something stupid."
[...]
Captain Janeway: "Maybe we should go back to Sickbay."
Admiral Janeway: "Why? So you can have me sedated?
Captain Janeway: "So I can have the Doctor reconfirm your identity. I refuse to believe I'll ever become as cynical as you." |
Captain Janeway: "If you knew that returning to the Alpha Quadrant was your only chance for recovery... why didn't you object when I asked you to help find a way to destroy the hub?"
Tuvok: "My sense of logic isn't impaired yet. If we succeed, millions of lives will be saved."
Captain Janeway: "What about your life?"
Tuvok: "To quote Ambassador Spock: 'The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.'" |
| Harry: "I think it's safe to say that no one on this crew has been more... obsessed with getting home than I have. But, when I think about everything we've been through together, maybe it's not the destination that matters. Maybe it's the journey. And if that journey takes a little longer so we can do something we all believe in, I can't think of any place I'd rather be, or any people I'd rather be with." |
Admiral Janeway: "Coffee. Black."
Captain Janeway: "I thought you'd gave it up."
Admiral Janeway: "I've decided to revive a few of my old habits." (not only the coffee)
(later) Admiral Janeway: "I don't know why I ever gave this up." |
| Admiral Janeway (to her younger self): "Captain...I'm glad I got to know you again." |
Doctor (to B'Elanna in labor): "Relax!"
B'Elanna (outraged): "If you tell me to relax one more time I'm gonna rip your holographic head off!" |
| Admiral Janeway: "I don't know how you do it. All those voices talking at once. You must get terrible headaches!" |
Admiral Janeway: "I've become a pragmatist in my old age. All I want is to get that crew back to their families." Borg Queen: "You wish to ensure the well-being of your Collective. I can appreciate that. I'll help you. But it'll cost more than you're offering." |
Borg Queen (staggering): "What... have you... done?" Admiral Janeway (becoming a drone): "It must be something you assimilated!" Borg Queen: "You've infected us... with an neurolytic pathogen!" Admiral Janeway: "Just enough... to bring chaos to order!" |
Borg Queen (dieing): "Voyager will be destroyed." Admiral Janeway: "They're ahead of the shock wave. They'll survive. Captain Janeway and I made sure of that. It's YOU who underestimated US!" |
Janeway (almost surprised): "We did it." Harry (trembling): "We're being hailed!" Janeway: "On screen. Sorry to surprise you, sir. Next time, we'll call ahead" |
| Janeway (with her lasts words in the series ever): "Set a course... for home." |
Background
Keeping the 35 year old tradition alive, the series finale has, of course, a Captain's log sequence and a stardate, like almost every other episode of season 7 (quite unlike "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", which more or less abandoned the Trek typical narrative device in its later seasons). For the record, here's the complete transcript from "Endgame II":
"Captain's Personal Log, Stardate 54973.4. We've begun outfitting Voyager with Admiral Janeway's upgrades. As soon as the major modifications are complete we'll reverse course and head back to the nebula. Though I've certainly had some strange experiences in my career, nothing quite compares to the sight of my future self briefing my officers on technology that hasn't been invented yet." |
| 26 years in the future (in 2403), 10 years after Voyager's homecoming (in 2393), the former crew members have continued their lives and careers. Captain Janeway has become an Admiral working at Starfleet Command, like her father Edward Janeway ("Coda"). And just like her father, she has been involved with intelligence issues (Jeri Taylor's "Mosaic") - at least until she started teaching at the Starfleet Academy. This is there Reginald Barclay, honorary member of the former crew and now promoted to Commander, works, teaching cadets on the Borg in the old Pathfinder Lab - supported by Admiral Janeway for this semester. Very true to his (more or less) steady development from the immature, always thoughtless hotshot lieutenant to a caring, dignified husband and father, Tom Paris hasn't become a Starfleet test pilot, as proposed in "Bliss", but a civilian holonovel writer. His ambitions to publish his work were already hinted on in "Author, Author", where he wanted the Doctor's publisher to review his "Captain Proton" serials. Quite similiar to Worf's way from Starfleet officer to the Federation ambassador on Q'onoS ("What You Leave Behind"), Tom's wife B'Elanna is now a Federation liaison with "quite some influence". Harry Kim, Ensign forever despite his ambitions ("Unimatrix Zero II", "Author, Author"), has finally managed to achieve his goal and become a genuine Starfleet captain with his own starship, the USS Rhode Island. Lately, he has been on a four year deep space mission. The Doctor has stayed in Starfleet as well and now works at Starfleet Medical, there he tests experimental new drugs among other things. Two weeks ago, he has married Lana, a beautiful blonde with a striking resemblance with Seven, the woman he never got despite his strong emotions for her ("Someone To Watch Over Me", "Renaissance Man"). Finally, he has also taken the quite trivial name "Joe", after his bride's grandfather. The Doctor's search for a name lasted 33 years and included the "name candidates" Spock (after Dr. Benjamin McLane Spock, not the famous Vulcan!), Salk (after Dr. Jonas Salk, "Ex Post Facto"), Schweitzer (after Albert Schweitzer, "Heroes and Demons") and Shmullus (after Danara Pel's uncle, "Life Signs"). |
| Numerous crew members have lived happily and successfully since the intial homecoming, however, in the original future some of Captain Janeway's friends encountered serious hardships. After her marriage with Chakotay, Seven died after she was injured on an away mission in 2380, affecting the lives of both her husband and her former mentor, Janeway. The first one already died in 2394 (and was interestingly born in 2329, according to the gravestone, while "Tattoo" established that he was seven years younger, born in 2335), only one year after Voyager's return to Earth, due to an unknown disease. Another victim of Voyager's extended journey through the Delta Quadrant was Tuvok. The Vulcan went insane because the mental disorder affecting him already in 2377 (which was perhaps also responsible for his unexpected pon farr in "Body and Soul") was not treated in time by a "fal-tor-voh" mind meld with one of his family members. However, now that Voyager was brought home already seven years after she stranded far away from Earth, none of these sad events is expected to happen. |
| In the future, Tuvok has of course taken his famous Vulcan meditiation lamp with him to his new quarters in the Starfleet Medical Center, as the close-up of him writing reveals. Together with other candles on the floor, the lamp slightly lits the darkened room so that he can pursue his "work" despite his sensitiveness to (very bright) light. The Vulcan meditiation lamp has been seen again and again in the series since it was introduced in "The Gift", the episode in which Kathryn Janeway told Kes the story how her long-term friend obtained his most important accessory for meditiation from a Vulcan master in 2368. Other episodes which showed the lamp with Vulcan calligraphy include "Night", "Juggernaut", "The Barge of the Dead", "Repression" and "Body and Soul". |
| The "family photo" of the Voyager crew Admiral Janeway gives Tuvok in the future as a farewell present actually is simply the "Star Trek: Voyager" season 7 cast photo. However, this isn't the first time background material is used "officially" within the Star Trek universe. At the end of "Living Witness", a framed photo of the Doctor aboard Voyager was shown that actually was the season 4 publicity shot of actor Robert Picardo as "EMH". |
